Life Is a Test
Of course God already knows our hearts and can already see our future (because He is all knowing), but as with Abraham, sometimes God puts us through a testing. God tested Abraham by asking him to offer Isaac, the son of promise, his only son (by his wife, Sarah). (See Genesis 22; Hebrews 11:17-19) When Abraham obeyed and offered Isaac (although God didn't require him to complete the sacrifice), God then said, "Now I know that you fear God." (Genesis 22:12)
The following passages also teach that God tests us, tests our hearts:
Deuteronomy 8:2; 13:3
1 Chronicles 29:17
Jeremiah 11:20; 12:3; 17:10; 20:12
1 Thessalonians 2:4
In the trials we face, perhaps God is refining our spirits (James 1:2-4), or perhaps looking to receive honor and glory ("scoring points", if you will) in heavenly places as in the case of Job.
